The Eyes in the Unseen Backdoor

Threat Type: IP Camera Exploitation & Sextortion

What Happened

An NRI husband noticed unexplained bank withdrawals totaling lakhs from his account. Rushing home to Kerala, he discovered his wife was being blackmailed with intimate footage secretly recorded inside their own bedroom. The source was a cheap, unbranded IP camera he had installed as a 'decorative showpiece' to monitor the home remotely. Its built-in firmware backdoor allowed hackers to stream live footage through external servers without the owner's knowledge, turning a safety tool into a spy device.

How It Was Resolved

  • •Identified the compromised IP camera's backdoor firmware streaming to unauthorized external servers.
  • •Disconnected and replaced all unverified surveillance devices with certified security hardware.
  • •Filed a sextortion complaint with the cyber crime cell via 1930 and cybercrime.gov.in.

Red Flags to Watch For Next Time

  • •Cheap, unbranded IP cameras with hardcoded default passwords and unknown firmware origins.
  • •Unexplained bank withdrawals with a family member refusing to explain the reason.
  • •Third-party technicians requesting or retaining remote access credentials to surveillance devices.

Steps to Protect Yourself

  • •Only buy certified security hardware from verified vendors — never install cheap unbranded cameras in private spaces like bedrooms.
  • •Change all default administrator passwords immediately after installation and restrict remote access to trusted devices only.
